        Artist Biography

Joel Arthur makes paintings that are perceptually charged ‘events’, using modes of painting related to Op art, eld painting and systematic methods of application. His practice takes influence from the natural world and digital realms through palette and motif, more being an associative response with abstraction rather than descriptive rendering. Building up layers of line and pattern creates a density to Arthur’s paintings which deliver an optical vibration while continually requiring a slower and more cognitive unpacking of what is presented to the viewer.
Joel Arthur’s first solo exhibition ‘All lined up’ was held at the Canberra Contemporary Art Space, Manuka (2016). He has also exhibited in numerous group shows including; Guiruis New Art Prize, Art Gallery of Ballarat (2017), 10 Years Of Collecting Art For The ANU, Drill Hall Gallery (2017), M8, M16 Art Space (2017), Op Art, Brenda May Gallery, Sydney (2016), You Are Invited, Watters Gallery, Sydney (2016), Blaze 10, Canberra Contemporary Art Space (2016), Hatched, Perth Institute of Contemporary Art (2015), CAPO Art Prize, M16, Canberra (2015), Sometimes There Isn’t Anything To Get, Nancy Sever Gallery (2015). His paintings are held in KMPG, James and Jacqui Erskine and ANU art collections. Joel Arthur graduated from the Painting Department at the ANU School of Art in 2014.
